The Smilow Cancer Hospital Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program offers a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care. Under the direction of the Lead Genetic Counselor, and as a member of this team, the Genetic Counselor provides outstanding integrated patient care and supports the program's commitment to teaching and performing research in different aspects of cancer genetics. Excellent teamwork, verbal and written communication, collaboration and evidence-based practice are required.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Maintain a template of a minimum of 11 new patient openings a week less prior approved paid time off or based on position of assigned hours worked per week for those employees who are not 1.0 FTE
  • 2. Maintain compliance with Yale-New Haven Hospital mandatory training
  • 3. Meet Smilow Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program Genetic Counselor Standards and Expectations
  • 4. Travel to satellite network clinic locations to provide genetic counseling services, as needed
  • 5. Continuously perform clinical tasks accurately and independently: 5.1 Utilize clinical expertise to perform patient care responsibilities including: 5.1.1 Accurate and consistent risk assessment 5.1.2 Patient education and psychosocial support for a broad range of referral indications 5.1.3 Facilitate patient decision-making and coordinate diagnostic genetic testing, as appropriate 5.1.4 Review results of diagnostic tests with program team to determine appropriate medical management direction and counseling plan at weekly multidisciplinary case conference 5.1.5 Disclose results of diagnostic tests to patients, facilitate patient education and understanding, and make referrals, as appropriate 5.1.6 Develop written reports to be sent to patients and the patients? referring providers and other members of the patients? healthcare team based on personal and family medical histories collected during the cancer genetics consultation and genetic test results 5.2 Demonstrate clinical expertise through comprehensive journal club and case presentations. 5.3 Research primary literature sources thoroughly for chart preparation for patient consultation, patient education fact sheets, and summary letter templates. 5.4 Demonstrates ability to translate primary literature into both professional and patient friendly materials

  • 7. Driven to improve the environment of the Smilow Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program with the aim of providing service excellence. The genetic counselor is able to recommend and implement reasonable solutions to address problems through demonstration of the following: 7.1 Ability to proactively anticipate their workload and plan accordingly, switching easily from one task to another. 7.2 Identification of new ideas and methods for saving resources and accomplishing work most effectively. 7.3 Learning from past experiences and ability to use this knowledge for future decision making. 7.4 Proactively consider and use a variety of approaches and interventions to complete tasks or achieve goals. 7.5 Proactively gets involved in projects without being asked or instructed to do so. 7.6 Follows through consistently on commitments and project closure. 7.7 Works well independently. 7.8 Exhibits strong organizational skills in relation to both autonomy and collaboration with other professionals. 7.9 Ability to communicate effectively with members of the administrative team within the Smilow Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program to independently resolve patient care issues.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling from an ABGC Accredited Program.

EXPERIENCE

At least one year of experience as a genetic counselor in an oncology setting preferred.

LICENSURE

Licensed as a genetic counselor in the state of Connecticut (at least temporary permit) Board certification or at minimum eligibility by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) required Due to state of Connecticut genetic counselor licensure requirements, candidates who are not ABGC board certified at the time of hiring must obtain board certification and full state license within 365 days from the date of obtaining their master's degree in genetic counseling.
